Rafael Nadal has defeated Roger Federer in the final of Internazionali BNL D’Italia. Nadal won the match in the straight sets by 6-1, 6-3.
It was a great performance by Nadal who was given the fifth seed in the tournament. He dominated right through the match and didn’t give his opponent any chance.
It was the 30th match between these two players and Nadal defeated Federer for the 20th time.
In the post match interview, Nadal said, “To be honest, I had never expected myself to win six out of my first eight tournaments after the comeback. The last few months have been absolutely fantastic for me. I want to thank my family members and friends who supported me when I was going through that tough period. They kept motivating me and I am really grateful to them.”
In the first set, Nadal was in an attacking mode. In the first two games of the set, both the players held their serve and the score card was showing 1-1 when the second game got over.
After that, Federer dropped his serve thrice successively and lost the next 5 games in a row to get trailed by a set.
Nadal started in the same manner in the following set as well. He broke Federer’s serve in the 2nd game and then, won his next service game to take a lead of 3-0.
The next couple of games went with the serve and then, in the 6th game, Nadal got another breakthrough to make the score 5-1 in his favour. The Spaniard had the chance to wrap up the match by serving out the 7th game, but, he couldn’t do that.
Federer broke Nadal’s serve in the 7th game and held his serve in the 8th game to decrease the lead to 5-3.
The Swiss maestro needed one more breakthrough to come back into the match, but, he didn’t get that. He couldn’t stop Nadal from holding his serve in the 9th game and lost the match.
